| Once
a child leaves the comfort of the moses basket, what to get next is
usually a straightforward choice between the standard cot or a cot bed The main difference between the two is that a baby cot bed will last longer. Whist a cot will probably last the baby until they are around 30 months old and baby cot bed will generally last until the child starts school as it can easily be changed into a bed which also allows you to continue to use the same bedding and mattress. The downside is that a standard cot is usually cheaper than a baby cot bed. If you have decided a baby cot bed is the way to go what you should be looking for are the important features they should have to keep your baby safe. Adjustable base positions Most baby cot beds have 3 different settings for the mattress height. You will start with the mattress set to its highest position allowing quick and easy access to the baby. As the baby grows and starts to get up onto their hands and needs, for safety the setting will need to be moved down one. When they begin to stand it will be essential that they are moved to the bottom level to avoid any chance of toppling out. Fixed or Drop Sides If you think that accessing the cot is going to be a problem then a drop side would be most beneficial. However, most people won’t have a problem with a fixed side cot on its highest setting as it will be quite easy to reach the baby, however as the settings are dropped then a fixed side cot may cause problems for more petite people when lifting the child in and out. If you do choose a drop side ensure the latch can be undone with one hand as more often than not you will have the baby in the other. Also it’s essential to check that the baby won’t be able to open the lock Spacing of Slats This is a very important consideration to ensure your baby won’t get its head stuck between the railings. A good cot bed should not have slats which are more than 2 3/8 inches apart Teething Rail These are a protective cover on the edges of the cot to stop the baby from biting into the cot when teething Choice of Mattress There are a number of different types of mattress you can buy for a baby cot bed.
